Living paycheck to paycheck can feel like your drowning.
Some days you feel on top of it, ready to take on the world with your new frugal living strategies, but then you realize you need an oil change, ran out of laundry detergent, popped a tire, don’t have any food for dinner…
No matter how much money you feel like you’re saving, how frugally you’re living, or even after getting a raise at work, as you come close to the end of the month you need that next paycheck just as desperately as the last.
My husband and I moved cross-country as full-time students and now live off of one small paycheck. We have discovered the key to ending the paycheck to paycheck lifestyle and we’re never turning back.
Imagine your savings growing every month with your same exact paycheck
Imagine not feeling like you need a raise to survive.
Imagine being able to go to the mall to pick out clothes without a shred of buyer’s remorse, anxiety or stress after you pay the bill!
If you’re ready to experience all this and more, get ready for the surefire way to end your paycheck to paycheck lifestyle once a for all:
YOU NEED A BUDGET!
Wait!! I have a pretty good guess as to what you’re thinking right about now…
“Budgets are too time-consuming,” or
“Budgets are boring”…
But that’s because you haven’t used a budget built around you.
A budget in itself is not hard to accomplish, and if it’s set up for success from the start, it 100% will not be boring OR time-consuming!
But the most important thing that you need to keep in mind is, a budget is your ONLY solution to getting out of your paycheck to paycheck lifestyle as quickly and as painlessly as possible.
So what’s holding you back?
I know people are flooded with ideas of budgets preventing them from taking trips and buying fun things for themselves, but it’s actually completely the opposite.
A budget can and WILL allow you to live your life to the fullest because it helps you find money you didn’t know you had and, and it diminishes the stress surrounding money to a distant memory.
You will finally be free of money anxiety because you will be spending responsibly within your means.
So let’s not only get into why you should start a budget, but why you absolutely NEED a budget.
First and foremost, you need a budget to break the link between stress and money.
Think about money anxiety as somewhat related to procrastination anxiety.
While in the midst of procrastinating, we hear a voice inside our heads telling us, “start working,” but we’re either too busy or maybe even too lazy to do what’s necessary.
As that deadline approaches, stress kicks us into high gear and we do a whole bunch of work in a short period of time all the while kicking ourselves because the same job could have been accomplished without all the unnecessary stress if we would have paced ourselves.
Living paycheck to paycheck and any other type of money stress is essentially personal finance procrastination.
When your bank account starts to dwindle, but more bills still need to get paid, you hear the voice in your head saying, “money would be easier if you got in control of your finances!”
But you’re too busy or just don’t even know where to begin to start managing your money correctly. So you sit in unnecessary stress, hoping no surprise expenses arise to force you further behind on payments and deeper in debt.
But then you get your paycheck! You have money in your bank account, the stress is gone, and the motivation to get a budget disappears along with it.
This, however, does not mean the money stress cycle isn’t going away:
It’s going to keep happening, month in and month out until you take control of your finances.
When you stay on top of your finances and do a small amount of work every day, you can completely remove the stress associated with money.
How does a budget end my paycheck to paycheck lifestyle?
So back to the main point: A budget gets you out of the paycheck to paycheck lifestyle!
And it truly is so simple!
Every month you’ll create a plan for you money (before you spend it!) that ensures you’ll have a little extra money left over at the end of the month!
But the benefits don’t stop there!
When you’re not living paycheck to paycheck, you’re automatically going to start building a savings.
And it’s not a fleeting savings when you’re on a budget.
When you’re on a budget, your savings will grow EVERY SINGLE MONTH. Without fail!
But the greatest of all benefits is what it does for you, personally.
Take a moment to think about all the stress and anxiety that would be taken off your shoulders if you had $1,000 dollars in your savings account for emergencies.
That is the feeling of financial security and it can be yours, right now.
All you have to do is stop procrastinating and start building a budget!
The first step to starting a successful budget is getting all those budgeting misconceptions out of your head.
Misconception #1: Budgets are Too Difficult
You may have attempted to build a budget in the past, but didn’t know where to begin or got lost in the jargon.
The truth is, a budget is actually very simple. You’re just deciding how you want to spend your money before you spend it.
Misconception #2: Budgets are Boring
Maybe you’ve built a budget in the past and quit because it was a lot of mundane work.
And the truth is, the core idea of a budget is pretty boring. Its simplicity is its downfall.
But your budget can actually be built around you!
Obviously, a budget is going to get you out of the paycheck to paycheck lifestyle, help you increase your savings EVERY MONTH, and give you financial security, but your budget can also be a tool for responsibly buying things for yourself.
And when your budget is built around getting things for yourself, budgeting becomes a whole lot more fun and an enjoyable practice.
So stop procrastinating and create a budget!
